The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers via email, text messages, or social media to request personal or financial information. If you receive a phone call claiming to be from the IRS, direct the caller to contact your accountant. There are no penalties for verifying the legitimacy of the agent.

Notices & Letters

The IRS will contact you by letter; however, not all letters claiming to be from the IRS are legitimate. If you receive a suspicious letter, please contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040 and follow the steps for reporting phishing.
